Why the price went away
It wasn’t much of a price. But it sat in front of the app, and it asked you to decide something before you’d used it once — whether a thing you hadn’t tried was worth paying for, on the strength of a store page.
That’s a strange thing to ask of an app whose whole job is to be there in a moment you didn’t plan for. The evening you reach for the feed without deciding to is not the evening to discover the app you needed is behind a checkout.
So it isn’t.
What free does not mean here
Free usually comes with a catch, and the catch is usually you. Not here, and the reason is architectural rather than a promise:
No ads. None, in any form. No sponsored anything.
No data, because there is nowhere to send it. No account, no sign-up, no analytics. Your budgets, your history, your score all live in the app’s private storage on your device. There is no server behind Pausa — not one that’s respectful, not one that anonymises: none at all. Nothing to collect, nothing to sell, nothing to leak.
No fees, and nothing to upgrade to. No subscription, no premium tier, no pack of extra features waiting behind a button.
The reason this is sustainable is the same reason it’s private. An app that runs entirely on your phone costs almost nothing to keep running. There are no servers to pay for, and no growth team to feed.
If you already bought it
Thank you. You paid for something before it was proven, which is the harder version of trust, and it’s part of why the app got finished at all. Nothing changes for you — you have everything, exactly as before.
What it actually does
Give the apps that pull at you a daily intention — thirty minutes of Instagram, an hour of YouTube, none at all for the one you already know about. Pausa keeps the count quietly. Five minutes out, it says so. When the time is spent, the app meets a calm screen instead of the feed.
Strict mode makes loosening slow and tightening instant, so the decision you made in a calm afternoon still holds in a tired evening. An evening window puts your chosen apps to sleep overnight. The history is a mirror, not a report card — nothing resets, nothing breaks, and an off day costs you nothing.
That’s it. It doesn’t nag, it doesn’t lecture, and it never tells you that you have a problem.
